About Wichita Theatre Organ

Wichita Theatre Organ, Inc. (WTO) was formed 43 years ago to purchase, own, maintain and produce musical events on a theatre organ in the then-new Centrury II.

It all started with a small group of people interested in the theatre pipe organ getting permission to use the 3 manual 11 rank Wurlitzer in the Miller Theatre here in Wichita. Using local musicians, the group began presenting musical intermissions on Friday and Saturday nights.  Because of the film presentations, it was impossible to present concerts at anything like desirable times.

Conversations in the group evolved to the thought of owning an instrument and locating it in a place suitable for concerts.  Where might that be?  The City of Wichita was approached about an organ for the then-under-construction Century II, and the idea met with instant enthusiasm.  The legal entity WTO was incorporated and an organ search initiated.

Several organs were considered, but when the New York Paramount Wurlitzer was available, no other consideration was necessary.  That is another story, but it suffices to say the organ was purchased, restored, and re-installed.  Opening night was December 9, 1972 with Rex Koury at the organ and the Vern Nydegger Orchestra.  The house was sold out!

Of the original group of 6, 2 are still involved: Michael Coup and J. D. Unruh.  Over the years many have come and gone, but the concerts continue, as do recordings and other special events.
